Yoast SEO vs Rank Math: Which WordPress SEO Plugin Should You Actually Use in 2026?
We compared Yoast SEO and Rank Math on features, pricing, schema, speed, AI tools, and ease of use. Here is our honest verdict after using both for years.
If you are running a WordPress website, choosing the right SEO plugin is one of the first decisions you will make. And in 2026, this decision almost always comes down to two names: Yoast SEO and Rank Math.
Both plugins have millions of active users. Both claim to be the best. And both have loyal communities that will argue all day about which one is better.
We have used both plugins across dozens of client websites at Growzai. Not for a week or a month, but for years. So instead of giving you a surface level comparison, we are going to break down what actually matters when you are trying to rank on Google.
A Quick Background
Yoast SEO has been around since 2010. It is the OG WordPress SEO plugin and for a long time, it was the only serious option. It was acquired by Newfold Digital in 2021 and has continued to evolve since then.
Rank Math launched in 2018 as a direct challenger to Yoast. It came in with an aggressive free tier that offered features Yoast was charging for, and it quickly gained a massive user base.
Both plugins now have millions of installations. But the gap in features, especially in the free versions, tells a very different story.
Free Version: This Is Where Rank Math Pulls Ahead
Most small businesses and bloggers start with the free version. And this is where Rank Math wins by a huge margin.
Rank Math Free gives you focus keyword optimization for unlimited keywords per post. Yoast free limits you to just one keyword per page. If you want to target more than one keyword on a single page (which you should), Yoast makes you pay for it.
A built-in redirect manager is included for free. When you delete a page or change a URL, you can set up a 301 redirect right from your dashboard. Yoast charges for this in premium.
404 error monitoring comes built in. Rank Math tracks broken links on your site automatically. With Yoast, you need a separate plugin or a third party tool.
Google Search Console integration is available inside your WordPress dashboard. You can see your search performance data without leaving your site. Google Analytics 4 integration is also built right in for free.
18 pre-built schema types are included — Article, Product, FAQ, HowTo, Recipe, LocalBusiness, and more. You can add multiple schema types to a single page.
Yoast Free gives you basic on-page SEO analysis with the traffic light system (red, orange, green), readability scoring, XML sitemap generation, and basic schema markup. That is pretty much it.
The free version of Yoast feels like a teaser for the premium version. The free version of Rank Math feels like a full product.
Premium Pricing: Rank Math Is Way More Affordable
Yoast SEO Premium costs $129 per year for a single website. If you manage 5 client sites, that is $645 per year. Ten sites means $1,290 per year. They recently simplified their plans and now include Local SEO, Video SEO, and News SEO features in the premium subscription. But the per-site pricing adds up fast.
They also have a WooCommerce SEO plan at $178.80 per year and an AI+ tier at $358.80 per year.
Rank Math Pro starts at $7.99 per month (billed annually, so about $96 per year) and covers unlimited personal websites. That means one subscription covers every site you own. For agencies, their Business plan covers unlimited client sites too.
If you are a freelancer or agency managing multiple websites, this pricing difference alone is enough to make the decision. Paying per site with Yoast versus one flat fee with Rank Math is a no-brainer for most people.
On-Page SEO Analysis
Both plugins analyze your content and tell you what to fix. But they do it differently.
Yoast uses the famous traffic light system. Green means good, orange means needs work, red means there is a problem. It checks your focus keyword in the title, meta description, URL, headings, and body content. It also has a separate readability analysis that checks paragraph length, transition words, passive voice usage, sentence length, and Flesch reading ease score.
Yoast's readability analysis is genuinely better than Rank Math's. If you are writing content and want detailed feedback on how readable your writing is, Yoast does a better job here.
Rank Math uses a 0 to 100 scoring system. It checks all the same on-page factors but also adds a few things Yoast does not, like checking for external links, image alt attributes, and content length. The scoring system feels more intuitive because you can see exactly where you stand with a number instead of just a color.
The big advantage with Rank Math is the ability to optimize for multiple keywords per post in the free version. This is huge for SEO because most pages should target 2 to 3 related keywords, not just one.
Yoast has slightly better readability analysis. Rank Math has better overall SEO analysis and the multi-keyword feature for free makes it the winner here.
Schema Markup
Schema markup is one of the most underrated SEO factors. It helps Google understand what your page is about and can get you rich snippets in search results like star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, recipe cards, and more.
Rank Math includes 18+ schema types in the free version. You can add FAQ schema, HowTo schema, Product schema, LocalBusiness schema, Recipe schema, and more without writing a single line of code. You can also add multiple schema types to a single page.
Yoast has improved its schema implementation over the years. It automatically adds basic schema to your pages (like Article, WebPage, Organization). But for advanced schema types like FAQ or HowTo, you need the premium version or a separate plugin.
Rank Math wins this one clearly. The free schema options are far more extensive and easier to use.
Site Speed and Performance
This matters more than people think. A heavy SEO plugin that adds too many database queries can slow down your site.
Both plugins have gotten better at this over the years. Rank Math was initially criticized for being heavier because it packs so many features into one plugin. But they have optimized the codebase significantly.
Yoast is slightly lighter in terms of database queries, especially if you are only using the free version with default settings. That said, the difference in real world performance is minimal. Unless you are running a massive site with 10,000+ pages, you probably will not notice any speed difference between the two.
AI Features
Both plugins have jumped on the AI bandwagon in 2025 and 2026.
Rank Math launched Content AI, which helps you research keywords, generate content outlines, and get AI-powered suggestions for improving your content. They also added llms.txt support, which helps AI crawlers understand your site structure, and an AI search traffic tracker that monitors how AI search engines reference your content.
Yoast added AI features in their Premium and AI+ plans. The AI+ tier at $358.80 per year includes AI content generation, brand monitoring, and all the premium features combined.
Rank Math gives more AI features at a lower price point. Yoast's AI features are locked behind their most expensive tier.
Internal Linking
Internal linking is critical for SEO but most people ignore it because it is tedious.
Rank Math launched automated internal linking in March 2026. It analyzes your content and suggests relevant internal links across your entire site, handling keyword variations automatically. This is available in the premium version.
Yoast Premium also has internal linking suggestions that recommend related posts as you write. It has had this feature for longer and it works well.
Both do a good job here. The difference is that Rank Math's newer implementation is more automated, while Yoast gives you suggestions that you manually add.
Redirect Manager
When you change a URL or delete a page, you need to set up a redirect so you do not lose any SEO value from backlinks pointing to the old URL.
Rank Math includes a redirect manager in the free version. You can set up 301, 302, and 307 redirects right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yoast only includes redirect management in the premium version.
Rank Math wins. Getting redirects for free is a big deal, especially for small businesses that change URLs frequently.
Ease of Use
Yoast is simpler out of the box. The setup wizard is straightforward, and the interface is clean and minimal. If you are brand new to SEO and just want something that works without overwhelming you, Yoast is easier to start with.
Rank Math has a more detailed setup wizard that walks you through importing settings from other SEO plugins (including Yoast). The interface has more options, which can feel overwhelming at first. But once you spend 15 minutes clicking around, it starts to make sense.
Rank Math also has an Advanced mode that you can turn off if you want a simpler experience. So it works for beginners and advanced users.
Migration: Switching from Yoast to Rank Math
If you are currently using Yoast and thinking about switching, Rank Math makes it easy. Their setup wizard has a one-click import feature that pulls in all your Yoast settings, meta titles, meta descriptions, focus keywords, and redirects.
We have migrated multiple client sites from Yoast to Rank Math and never lost any rankings. The migration is clean if you follow the steps properly.
One important tip: always take a full site backup before switching any SEO plugin. And after migration, check your top 10 to 20 most important pages to make sure the meta titles and descriptions transferred correctly.
So Which One Should You Pick?
Choose Rank Math if you want maximum features without paying anything. The free version alone covers what most small to medium websites need. You manage multiple websites and the pricing structure saves you money. You want built-in schema markup without dealing with separate plugins. You care about Google Search Console and Analytics integration inside WordPress.
Choose Yoast if you are a complete beginner and want the simplest possible interface. You rely heavily on readability analysis for your content. You are already using Yoast on a large site and do not want to deal with migration. You want a plugin with a longer track record and a massive community for support.
Our recommendation at Growzai: For most WordPress users in 2026, Rank Math offers better value. The free version is genuinely generous, the premium pricing is fair, and the feature set keeps getting better. We use Rank Math on most of our client sites and have seen consistently good results.
That does not mean Yoast is bad. It is a solid plugin that does the job. But when you compare feature for feature and look at the pricing, Rank Math simply gives you more for less.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Rank Math really free or is there a catch?
Rank Math's free version is genuinely free with no hidden limits on core features. You get unlimited focus keywords, redirect manager, 404 monitoring, Google Search Console integration, and 18+ schema types without paying anything. The Pro version adds advanced features like automated internal linking, Content AI, and Google Analytics integration, but the free tier is more than enough for most small to medium websites.
Will I lose my rankings if I switch from Yoast to Rank Math?
No, switching from Yoast to Rank Math should not affect your rankings if done properly. Rank Math has a built-in migration tool that imports all your meta titles, descriptions, focus keywords, and redirects from Yoast. We have migrated multiple client sites and never seen a ranking drop. Just make sure to take a full backup before switching and verify your top pages after migration.
Which plugin is better for WooCommerce stores?
Both plugins support WooCommerce, but the value proposition differs. Yoast charges $178.80 per year for their WooCommerce SEO plan for a single site. Rank Math Pro at $96 per year covers unlimited sites including WooCommerce stores, with product schema, breadcrumbs, and all SEO features included. For most online stores, Rank Math is the more cost-effective choice.
Can I use both Yoast and Rank Math together?
No, you should never run two SEO plugins simultaneously. They will conflict with each other and create duplicate meta tags, sitemaps, and schema markup, which can hurt your rankings. Pick one and deactivate the other completely before activating your chosen plugin.
Which plugin is better for local SEO?
Rank Math includes LocalBusiness schema and Google Business Profile integration in its free version. Yoast previously sold Local SEO as a separate addon but has now bundled it into Premium at $129 per year. If local SEO matters for your business and you do not want to pay, Rank Math is the clear winner here.
