Trump Renamed AI "Super Intelligence". What Actually Changed, and What It Means for Indian Businesses

The US now officially calls AI "Super Intelligence", Trump has a Super Intelligence Force, and Musk renamed SpaceX AI to SpaceX SI. What happened, why they are pushing it, and what Indian businesses should actually do.

On 29 September 2026, the President of the United States signed an executive order telling every federal agency to stop saying "artificial intelligence". From now on, in official US government language, it is "Super Intelligence", or SI.

Five days later he set up a "Super Intelligence Force" inside the government. The same day, Elon Musk announced that SpaceX's AI division would be renamed SpaceX SI.

If you run a business in India, it is fair to ask whether any of this matters to you. Some of it does. Most of it does not. Here is how to tell which is which.

What actually happened

Three separate things happened in one week, and they are easy to blur together.

The rename. The executive order of 29 September directs federal departments to replace "Artificial Intelligence" with "Super Intelligence" in official materials and communications. Existing contracts and regulations are not changed. The President's science adviser was asked to propose a formal federal definition of the new term. Trump's own explanation was that "artificial" makes the technology sound fake, and that "super" was the simplest replacement.

The accord. At a White House meeting the same week, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Nvidia and SpaceX's AI unit signed a voluntary accord on safety. They committed to layers of internal and external review of their most powerful systems. It is voluntary, not law. Trump described it as "morally binding".

The task force. On 4 October, Trump announced the Super Intelligence Force, led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, with FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Under Secretary Emil Michael and OPM Director Scott Kupor. It has 120 days to report on the risks and opportunities of the technology. Its stated brief is to make sure America keeps leading the world, and to prepare for threats while avoiding regulation that would slow innovation down.

Why Trump and Musk are pushing "superintelligence"

They are pushing the same word for overlapping but different reasons.

For the White House, it is about the race and about the story. Trump has said superintelligence will be a bigger field than the Industrial Revolution or the internet. The new task force is explicitly built around keeping the US ahead of every other country. There is also a public opinion angle. US reporting at the time noted that the rebrand came after weeks of bad headlines about AI agents disrupting company and government websites, and as polling on the issue was turning against the administration. A new name is a way to reset the conversation from risk to ambition.

For Musk, the term matches his own forecasts. At Davos in January 2026, he predicted AI smarter than any single human by the end of 2026 or soon after, and smarter than all of humanity combined by around 2030 or 2031. Renaming his AI business to "SI" on the day of the task force announcement lines his company up with the language of the US government, which is also a major customer of SpaceX.

Not everyone has gone along with it. Leaders at Google, OpenAI and Anthropic have kept using "AI". California's Governor Gavin Newsom ordered his state agencies to keep using "artificial intelligence". Senator Mark Warner said that changing the name does nothing to address the real risks of increasingly powerful systems. And in October 2025, more than 800 public figures, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, signed a Future of Life Institute statement calling for a prohibition on developing superintelligence until there is broad scientific agreement that it can be done safely, and public support for it.

Is today's AI actually superintelligence?

By the usual definition, no.

In research, superintelligence means a system that outperforms the best humans at almost every intellectual task, not one or two. The tools your customers use today, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Google's AI Overviews, are very capable. They are also wrong regularly, and they cannot run a business on their own.

The executive order changes what the US government calls the technology. It does not change the technology. ChatGPT did not get smarter on 29 September.

That matters for one practical reason. Over the next year you will see Indian software vendors and agencies start selling "SI" products and "SI-powered" services. Ask what the product actually does. If the answer is the same as last month's AI tool with a new label, price it accordingly.

What this means for Indian businesses

Strip away the naming, and one thing is clear from all three announcements. The US government has chosen speed over restriction. The accord is voluntary, the task force is told to avoid overregulation, and the companies building these systems have the White House's backing to move fast.

For a business in India, the effect will not arrive as a policy. It will arrive as a change in how your customers find you.

AI answers will take a bigger share of search. Google already shows AI Overviews on many searches in India and is rolling out AI Mode, which answers the whole question in a conversation before showing a single website. ChatGPT and Gemini are where a growing number of buyers start. When the companies building these tools are encouraged to accelerate, these answer boxes get bigger, not smaller.

The question is no longer only "do we rank?" It is "does the AI mention us?" When someone asks an AI assistant for the best supplier, clinic or agency in their city, it names a few businesses and explains why. If you are not one of them, ranking fifth in the old blue links helps less every month.

AI tools quote the businesses that are easiest to understand. We see this in our own client work. When a business's pages clearly state what it sells, where, at what grades and on what terms, AI answers name it. When the same information is buried in a PDF catalogue or an Instagram reel, the AI either skips the business or quotes the reel instead of the website.

What to do this quarter

None of this needs a big budget. It needs the basics done properly.

1. Check whether AI can read your site at all. Some firewalls and hosting setups quietly block the crawlers used by ChatGPT and Perplexity. Our free AEO checker shows this in a minute. 2. Answer the questions your buyers actually ask, on your own pages. Prices or price ranges, minimum order, delivery areas, turnaround, comparisons with alternatives. Direct answers near the top of the page are what AI assistants quote. 3. Add structured data. Product, Organization, LocalBusiness and FAQ schema tell machines exactly what your page is about. Our schema guide for Indian businesses covers the ones that matter. 4. Keep your business details identical everywhere. Same name, address, phone and services on your website, Google Business Profile, IndiaMART, JustDial and LinkedIn. AI systems cross-check, and inconsistency costs you trust. 5. Track it. Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode the five questions your best customers would ask, and note whether you appear. Screenshot it. That is your real visibility report.

The bottom line

Whether the US calls it AI or SI is a political and branding decision. What should matter to an Indian business owner is the direction underneath it. The most powerful government in the world has decided to back this technology at full speed, and the companies building it now have even more room to grow.

Your customers will keep asking machines who to buy from. The businesses those machines can read, understand and trust will be the ones that get named.
