ChatGPT Ads in India: What Launched, What It Costs, and Why Most Sites Cannot Run One Yet

ChatGPT ads opened to Indian advertisers on 31 August 2026. Here is what actually launched, who sees the ads, what nobody is telling you about landing page approval, and what we still do not know.

ChatGPT ads opened to self-serve advertisers in India on 31 August 2026. At the time of writing that is three weeks ago, which means every guide you read on the subject, including this one, is written by someone who has not been doing it for long.

This is what is actually known, what is still uncertain, and the one technical requirement that will stop most Indian websites from running an ad at all.

What has actually launched

OpenAI's Ads Manager is now self-serve in India, alongside roughly fifty other markets. Before this, running ads inside ChatGPT meant going through a managed sales process with a very large minimum commitment, or through one of the large agency holding groups. That gate is gone.

Billing is in rupees. Reported daily budgets start at around seven hundred rupees, which puts a month of genuine testing inside the budget of a small business rather than an enterprise.

Verify the current minimum inside Ads Manager before you plan around it. Reported figures for this platform have moved several times already in 2026 and the press numbers lag the product.

Who actually sees the ads

This is the part that changes how you should think about the channel.

Ads are shown to users on the Free and Go tiers. Subscribers on the higher paid tiers see no ads at all.

For India that is a favourable split, because ChatGPT Go is priced low enough that the free and low-cost tiers hold the overwhelming majority of Indian users. You are reaching a very large audience, but it skews towards people who have not paid for the product.

If your buyer is an enterprise CTO on a company-paid subscription, they may never see your ad. If your buyer is a consumer, a small business owner, or a student, they almost certainly will.

What the ads look like

Three formats exist at present.

Sponsored answer cards appear inline within the generated response, carrying a Sponsored label. They hold a headline, body copy, an optional image and a call to action button. This is the format that matters most, because it sits inside the answer rather than beside it.

Product spotlight units trigger on shopping intent. They render as a grid of product cards below the response, with image, name, price and a buy or learn more action. If you sell physical products, this is your format, and it depends on a product feed.

Sidebar placements are text only, on the right of the desktop web interface. They behave much like classic text ads.

OpenAI has also been testing something described as sponsored agents, which is a different proposition entirely and not yet something you can plan around.

Writing for an answer, not a search result

A Google search ad interrupts someone who is looking for a page. A ChatGPT ad appears next to a paragraph that has just answered their question.

That changes the copy. By the time your ad is visible, the user has already been told what to do. Your ad is not competing to answer the question. It is offering the specific way to act on an answer they already have.

Copy that works in that position tends to be concrete and narrow. A specific product, a specific price, a specific next step. Copy that repeats the explanation the model has just given is wasted, because the user has read it already.

Nobody has enough data yet to be confident about this, and anyone telling you they have a proven ChatGPT ad copy formula is describing a hunch.

The requirement nobody is talking about

Before OpenAI approves your ad, it sends its own crawler to look at your landing page. If the crawler cannot read the page properly, the ad is rejected.

Not throttled. Not shown less often. Rejected.

The common causes of failure are mundane and extremely widespread on Indian business websites.

  • robots.txt blocks OpenAI's crawlers. A great many sites added a blanket rule blocking AI bots in 2025, when the advice going around was that AI companies were scraping content for free. That rule is still sitting there, and it now blocks the crawler that approves your advertising.
  • A firewall or security plugin returns a 403. Cloudflare bot protection, Wordfence, Sucuri and similar tools frequently block anything that is not a recognised browser. Your page works perfectly for you and is invisible to the reviewer.
  • There is no favicon. A small thing, and a documented cause of rejection.
  • The destination is not a plain web page. A PDF, an app store link, or a page that renders nothing without JavaScript.

The uncomfortable part is that all four of these fail silently. Your site looks fine in a browser. You will not discover the problem until your ad does not run, and the rejection message will not necessarily tell you which of the four it was.

How to check before you spend anything

Open your robots.txt by adding /robots.txt to your domain in a browser. Read it.

If you see a blanket disallow for all user agents, or specific rules blocking GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot or OAI-AdsBot, that needs changing before you advertise. OAI-AdsBot is the one that reviews landing pages.

Then check that your landing page returns real HTML to something that is not a browser, that a favicon exists, and that the destination is a normal page rather than a file or an app link.

If you want this checked automatically, our free AI visibility audit reports whether OpenAI's crawlers can reach your site, alongside the other signals AI assistants use. It is the same check, and it takes a few seconds.

Categories that cannot advertise

Dating, adult content, alcohol, tobacco, gambling and political advocacy are prohibited.

Health, financial services and legal services are permitted but go through manual review and require appropriate licensing documentation. In India that means being ready to produce registration details rather than assuming you will be waved through.

Find out where you stand before you build campaigns, not after.

What we genuinely do not know

This section matters more than the rest, because the internet is already full of confident benchmark tables for a channel that is weeks old.

Performance benchmarks are not reliable yet. Published click-through and conversion figures for ChatGPT ads vary enormously between sources, are mostly drawn from United States advertisers, and are based on very short runs. Applying a US B2B SaaS cost per thousand impressions to an Indian consumer brand tells you nothing useful.

The bidding options are still moving. Sources disagree on which bidding models are live right now, and OpenAI has been shipping changes monthly. Check what your own account actually offers rather than what a guide published last month says.

Nobody knows what the ads do to trust. ChatGPT's value to users rests on the answer feeling impartial. How users react to commercial placements inside that answer, over months rather than weeks, is genuinely unknown, and it will shape how much inventory exists and how well it performs.

Attribution will be hard. A user who reads about your product inside a conversation, then searches your brand name two days later and converts, will look like organic traffic. Early ChatGPT ad spend will almost certainly be undercredited by last click reporting.

What to do this week

If you are not advertising at all, this is not the channel to start with. Learn Google Ads first. The data is mature, the tooling is better, and you will make fewer expensive mistakes.

If you already run Google or Meta ads, treat this as a small experiment funded from a learning budget. Not a reallocation. The argument for starting now is that you understand the platform before your competitors do, not that it will outperform anything this quarter.

Whatever you decide about advertising, fix the crawler access. It costs nothing, it takes ten minutes, and it also affects whether ChatGPT can cite your business in ordinary unpaid answers. You should be doing it anyway.

The honest summary

A new advertising channel opened in India three weeks ago with a low barrier to entry and very little competition. That is genuinely interesting and it is worth understanding early.

It is also three weeks old. There are no experts. There is no reliable data. Anyone selling you certainty about return on ad spend is selling you their guess with a confident face on it.

Start small, measure properly, and fix your robots.txt first.

If you want to know whether your site would pass OpenAI's review, run the free audit. If you would rather we set the campaigns up and run them, that is ChatGPT Ads management, and we will tell you plainly what we do and do not know.
